Citizens for Modern Transit launched the Ten Toe Express program
in the St. Louis Region in 2007 linking walking with public transit
use resulting in a healthier, more active lifestyle. The Spring 2008
Session will kick-off on May 15, 2008.
The Ten Toe Approach
The program will use a two-pronged approach - targeting both older
adults and employees for the work commute - to encourage individuals
to walk more and use public transit. Linking walking and public transit
use has been proven to increase independence, accessibility and overall
health. So, get on board your Ten Toe Express and walk into a healthier
you!
Participants will receive a free Ten Toe walking kit which includes:
- A Ten Toe tote bag,
- A walking/bicycling map of the St. Louis area,
- A pedometer,
- weekly walk logs and food diaries,
- A coupon booklet with huge savings,
- MetroLink tickets,
- Safety tips, and
- Suggested walking tours.
Official Ten Toe Express Walking Tours will be held for participants
to step out and enjoy different destinations in St. Louis by foot,
train and bus. Each walking tour will be led by a trained Ten Toe
leader, with information included in the walking kits on the length
of each trip, the destination of interest and the level of walking
difficulty. The walking kits and group walking tours will show you
how easy it is to incorporate a walk into your daily life.
The pedometer will allow you to track the number of steps you take
each day and to track your progress as you increase your daily walking.
Each step you take is one step to closer to better health.
The Ten Toe program is free to participate and is a great opportunity
to learn how to access your community through "new" modes
of transportation - your own two feet, the bus and MetroLink!
