BIKE TO WORK
Bicycling is an increasingly popular
commute alternative, especially among
fitness conscious professionals. The
bicycle commute is an excellent option
for those individuals with commutes between
two and five miles long. Many bicycle
commuters travel much farther than five
miles to work just to enjoy the ride.
One way to increase the length of the
commute is to link bicycling with transit.
Bikes are allowed on board MetroLink,
and Bi-State buses with bike racks.
Plans have been made for all Bi-State
busses to be equipped with bicycle
racks.
Bicycle commutes provide many benefits
for the commuter. Bicycling promotes
fitness and a sense of well-being.
It helps to preserve the environment
by replacing short auto trips with
a pollutant free commute. It also requires
no non-renewable energy sources.
Some tips for bicyclists linking their
trips with transit include:
- Only load your bike at designated
stop.
- Be ready at the bus stop.
- Load your bike as quickly as possible.
- Let the bus operator know when
you are exiting the bus.
- For your safety, never step to
the street side of the bus when loading
or unloading your bike.
This clean commute provides a healthy,
convenient, reliable and inexpensive
form of transportation.
Bicycling can be an even safer
form of transportation by following
a few simple tips including:
- Always wear a helmet. Not only
will it provide protection in an
accident, it will also set a good
example of youngsters.
- Be a defensive rider. Remain aware
of traffic, obey the rules of the
road, and watch for drivers who may
not be watching for you.
- Maintain equipment. Properly inflate
tires, working brakes, reflectors
and head/tail lights are vital.
- Also be prepared for inclement weather,
and a carry a water bottle, too.
- Bicycling still may not be feasible
for some, but other alternatives
to driving alone may be the right
choice including carpooling, vanpooling,
MetroLink, the buses or walking.
