7/14/08
St. Louisans are hitting the pavement and counting their steps for
work and recreation in record numbers for the Citizens for Modern
Transit Ten Toe Express Program linking walking with using the MetroLink
and MetroBus. More than 4000 individuals have registered for the program
so far exceeding all expectations set for the program.
Session I in The Spring 2007 had 936 participants. Session II in
the Fall 2007 had 1274 participants, and the third session which kicked
off in May 2008 has registered 2540 participants to date. Not only
are more and more St. Louisans registering, more and more are participating
in the optional weekly walking groups making them "tourists in their
own town" by MetroLink and MetroBus.
Walk leader Dan O'Connor has seen record participation this year
for his Monday walk groups which average about 25 walkers per walk
with some walks reaching more than 50 participants. Many participants
have started to take ownership of their walk groups and are dedicated
to showing up each week to step out and walk with their fellow group
members.
The older adult outreach was funded through a grant from the Missouri
Foundation for Health. The goal was to have 2400 participants over
the life of the grant.CMT has seen more than 2650 older adults participating
since the inception. The commuter market outreach is funded through
a CMAQ grant from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments. This
grant is a two year grant with one year remaining. The goal for this
program was 2400 commuters. To date, the program has already registered
2075 commuters with more signing up each day.
