Tracking Development Around MetroLink
Citizens for Modern Transit advocates the building
and expansion of future MetroLink stations emphasizing how light rail
has played an integral role in building successful communities of
residential neighborhoods and businesses.
With that in mind, CMT has updated its database of major economic
and residential development projects located around MetroLink stations.
The database looks at three different areas: the Original Stations,
the St. Clair County IL Stations and the Cross County extension.
All projects have to fall within a half mile "development zone"
surrounding the Stations and each project must cost at least $100,000.
Those projects not completed must at least have a signed contract
in order to be included in the chart. To date, there has been more
than $32 billion in development along the original alignment and $1.2
billion along the recently opened Cross County extension.
The original MetroLink extension opened in 1993 to record ridership.
Since the opening of MetroLink in St. Louis, there has been significant
development and redevelopment around many of the stations including
revitalization efforts around such stations as the Delmar and Wellston
Stations. These projects have included both public and private investments
and many have utilized the state's historic tax credit program especially
in the downtown area.
