How
much will the construction of the line cost and who will pay for
it?
Based on the feasibility study from 2000, the estimated costs for
construction are $35 million. The Loop Trolley Company will seek
80 percent of the funding through federal transportation sources.
Members of the region's congressional delegation have been contacted
and support the project. The remaining 20 percent will be raised
by The Loop Trolley Company from local private and public sources.
Will
the cars run in the middle of the street?
The
feasibility study concluded that the modern design of streetcars
is to put them in the driving lane with curb bump outs at locations
for boarding passengers. A few parking spaces will be turned over
to the trolley. These will be more than offset by those who decide
to take the trolley to The Loop or History Museum rather than drive.
Will
the cars be handicapped accessible?
The
plan is to make the cars accessible for the handicapped. Curbside
lifts or ramps are planned rather than to include lifts on the trolley
cars themselves.
How
many total trolleys are needed?
The
feasibility study says five cars total are needed. The Loop Trolley
Company would like to rehabilitate a variety of historic trolleys
representative of the various cars that served St. Louis for so
many years.
How
frequently would the cars run?
Every
10 minutes during peak periods and every 15 minutes in off-peak
times.
What
would be the hours of operation?
The
trolleys would operate from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m.
Have
other cities restored historic streetcar service?
Many
cities have restored streetcar service including Tampa, Little Rock,
Portland, Memphis, Charlotte, Dallas, and New Orleans.
Who
supports the effort to restore trolley service?
In addition to The Loop Trolley Company and Citizens for Modern
Transit, the effort is supported by our congressional delegation,
University City, The City of St. Louis, The Missouri Historical
Society, The Loop Business District and numerous neighborhood groups.
