Development Around MetroLink
Citizens
for Modern Transit advocates the building and expansion of future
MetroLink stations emphasizing how light rail has played an integral
role in building successful communities of residential neighborhoods
and businesses.
With
that in mind, CMT is compiling the first database of major economic
and residential development projects located around MetroLink stations.
The database looks at three different areas: the Original
Stations, the St. Clair County
IL Stations and the Cross
County extension.
All
projects have to fall within a half mile "development zone"
surrounding the Stations and each project must cost at least $100,000.
Those projects not completed must at least have a signed contract
in order to be included in the chart.
The
original MetroLink extension opened in 1993 to record ridership
and will celebrate its 10th Anniversary this summer.
Since the opening of MetroLink in St. Louis, there has been significant
development and redevelopment around many of the stations including
revitalization efforts around such stations as the Delmar and Wellston
Stations. These projects have included both public and private investments
and many have utilized the state's historic tax credit program especially
in the downtown area. The development within a half mile radius
(10-minute walk) from the original alignment includes 1,457 nmore
than $4,348,000,000 in public and private investment with 2,865
new residential units and 4,137 new hotel rooms added in the region.
By the time all projects are completed, it will include more than
5,705,800 of square feet developed.
